Whether you are attempting to film a high-speed vehicle in the salt flats or getting Madonna to her show on time, the E39 M5 has captured the hearts of enthusiasts worldwide — including ours. It is a staple of EAG, and for good reason.

A super sedan that started a genre

When the E39 M5 arrived in 1998, it redefined what a four-door car could be. Under the hood sat the S62: a 4.9-liter, naturally aspirated V8 producing 394 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque, paired exclusively with a six-speed manual transmission. There was no automatic, no paddle shift — just three pedals and one of the best engines BMW has ever produced.

The numbers that still impress

  • Engine: 4.9L S62 V8, individual throttle bodies, double-VANOS
  • Power: 394 hp at 6,600 rpm
  • 0–60 mph: roughly 4.8 seconds
  • Top speed: 155 mph (electronically limited)
  • Production: 1998–2003, approximately 20,000 units worldwide

Why it endures

Plenty of cars are fast. What makes the E39 M5 special is how completely it hides its capability. It is understated to look at, comfortable enough to cross a continent in, and yet utterly transformed the moment you ask anything of it. That breadth — the ability to be two completely different cars depending on your mood — is what enthusiasts mean when they call it the benchmark.

The E39 M5 is the car that proves you never have to choose between a daily driver and a thrill. It is both, at the same time, without compromise.

Living with one today

These cars are now 20-plus years old, and condition varies enormously. The S62 is robust when maintained but unforgiving when neglected — cooling system health, VANOS seals, and timing chain guides all deserve attention. A well-sorted E39 M5 is a joy; a deferred-maintenance example can be a money pit. That gap is exactly where our experience matters.
