EAG Impressions

The E28 5-Series represented BMW's second generation of their executive sedan, building upon the success of the E12. While it retained a similar silhouette to its predecessor, the E28 brought refinements in aerodynamics, comfort, and performance. In Europe, enthusiasts were treated to the M535i, a precursor to the iconic M5. However, U.S. buyers initially had to settle for less potent options due to stricter emissions standards. It wasn't until 1986 that Americans finally got a taste of true M Division engineering with the introduction of the E28 M5, powered by a modified version of the M1 supercar's engine.

Overview

When BMW introduced the E28 M5, it quietly redefined what a performance sedan could be. Hand-assembled by BMW Motorsport GmbH, the U.S.-spec car was powered by the S38B35 3.5-liter inline-six, a close relative of the legendary M88 engine used in the European M1. Delivering 256 horsepower and paired exclusively with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the E28 M5 combined understated styling with motorsport engineering, creating the template for every high-performance four-door BMW that followed. Its mechanical purity and driver engagement remain the benchmark for the M5 lineage to this day.

This 1988 M5 shows 83,704 miles and presents as a remarkably honest, well-preserved example. Finished in its original black exterior over Natural leather, it retains the refined, purposeful look that defined BMW Motorsport’s first U.S.-market sedan. The paint displays even gloss with only minor patina consistent with age, and the interior remains clean and supple, with excellent leather condition and intact factory switchgear.

Originally a California car through 2018, this M5 was first sold by Enthusiast Auto Group in 2018 to a local client who continued to maintain it under our supervision throughout his ownership. Having benefitted from consistent care and detailed documentation, it returns to our facility with a fully traceable history and service continuity that few E28s enjoy.

In preparation for presentation and sale, this E28 received the Enthusiast Auto Group’s standard intake evaluation and preservation process, a detailed multi-point inspection, verification of fluids, systems, and components, and light recommissioning consistent with EAG’s delivery standards. All work will be carried out to maintain the car’s originality and ensure mechanical integrity for its next caretaker.

Mechanically, this M5 remains tight and confident, steering response is immediate, clutch engagement is solid, and the signature inline-six sound is unmistakable. The car feels cohesive and balanced, offering the mechanical intimacy that modern cars have long since lost.

History

Originally sold in California, this E28 M5 spent its early life on the West Coast before joining EAG’s collection in 2018. It was subsequently sold to a local client who maintained it exclusively through EAG, ensuring proper mechanical care and preservation. With long-term documentation, consistent service history, and mileage just over 83k, this M5 represents one of the most authentic, well-kept U.S.-spec E28 M5s available today.
