EAG Impressions
The E30 3-Series marked a significant evolution in BMW's compact sport sedan lineup. Its boxy yet elegant design would become emblematic of 1980s automotive styling. While European markets enjoyed a wide range of engine options, including the peppy 325i, U.S. models were often detuned to meet emissions requirements. The most notable disparity came with the M3. Introduced in Europe in 1986 as a homologation special for touring car racing, the E30 M3 didn't reach American shores until 1988, and even then with a slightly less powerful engine than its European counterpart.
Overview
Among all variants of the legendary E30 M3, none is more coveted than the Sport Evolution. Built as BMW Motorsport's final homologation evolution of the E30 platform, the Sport Evo represents the ultimate expression of the original M3, combining the largest-displacement S14 engine ever fitted to a production E30 with numerous chassis, aerodynamic, and mechanical refinements developed directly from BMW's touring car racing program.
This 1990 BMW M3 Sport Evolution is finished in Brilliant Red (308) over its factory Sport Evolution interior and shows just 68,329 miles. Produced on February 22, 1990 and delivered on April 23, 1990, this example was built for the United Kingdom market, as confirmed by its factory build data, before later being imported to the United States in the late 1990s. Factory equipment includes the electric sunroof, headlight washers, electric front windows, and UK-market specification.
As the final homologation version of the E30 M3, the Sport Evolution received BMW Motorsport's enlarged 2.5-liter S14 engine, producing approximately 238 horsepower, along with adjustable front splitter and rear wing, revised cooling, unique suspension calibration, thinner rear and side glass, and numerous lightweight components. Limited to just 600 examples worldwide, the Sport Evolution is widely regarded as the most desirable production E30 M3 ever built.
This particular example benefits from a documented enthusiast history and has long been known to Enthusiast Auto Group. We sold the car to its most recent owner in 2018, and it has remained in dedicated enthusiast ownership ever since. Prior to that sale, the car received extensive mechanical servicing by a respected BMW specialist, ensuring it was prepared to the standard expected of one of the finest homologation specials BMW Motorsport ever produced.
In preparation for presentation and sale, this Sport Evolution will receive Enthusiast Auto Group's standard intake evaluation and preservation process, a detailed multi-point inspection, verification of fluids, systems, and components, and light recommissioning consistent with EAG's delivery standards for investment-grade vehicles. All work will be carried out to preserve the car's originality while ensuring it is mechanically prepared for its next caretaker.
