EAG Impressions
The E36 represented a dramatic leap forward for the 3-Series, with its more aerodynamic design and sophisticated multilink rear suspension. While European customers enjoyed a full range of engine options from frugal four-cylinders to potent inline-sixes, U.S. buyers initially only received six-cylinder models. The disparity was most noticeable with the M3. European M3s boasted a sophisticated 3.0L (later 3.2L) inline-6, while U.S. models made do with a less powerful 3.0L engine derived from the 325i. This difference in specification would remain a point of contention among American BMW enthusiasts for years to come.
Overview
The E36 M3 represents a pivotal moment in BMW M history, bringing Motorsport performance to a broader audience while maintaining the balance, precision, and driver engagement that define the brand. In U.S.-spec form, the E36 M3 paired everyday usability with a robust inline-six, creating one of the most approachable and rewarding M cars of its era. However, examples like this, built through BMW Individual and further enhanced with period-correct upgrades, exist in an entirely different category.
This 1995 BMW M3 Individual is finished in Arctic Grey Metallic over Black M Rain (Hurricane) cloth interior and now shows just 27,000 miles. Originally special ordered through BMW Individual, this car stands apart from standard production examples with a rare specification and an extraordinary level of detail throughout.
Adding to its uniqueness, the car was sent to Alpina for factory-installed equipment as part of a European delivery, an extremely uncommon process that resulted in a suite of bespoke features. These include a digital auxiliary gauge panel monitoring engine oil pressure and temperature, differential temperature, and coolant temperature, along with an Alpina finned aluminum differential cover and Alpina-specific interior accessories. These period-correct enhancements complement the car’s Motorsport roots while elevating its functionality and rarity.
The interior is particularly special, featuring M Rain cloth and Alcantara trim, red Motorsport seatbelts, and rare BMW Individual red carbon fiber interior trim. Additional details such as illuminated M shift knob, M door sills, rear sunshade, and dual under-seat fire extinguishers further reinforce the car’s bespoke nature. The car also features Euro-spec elements including a passenger-side mirror and additional onboard functionality.
Performance and driver engagement have been subtly enhanced with period-correct upgrades, including a Dinan cold air intake and a Dinan performance exhaust, along with a Motorsport strut brace. The car rides on rare staggered M3 GT forged aluminum wheels, completing the package with both visual presence and performance intent.
The exterior Arctic Grey Metallic paint remains original, presenting with excellent depth and consistency, while the interior shows minimal wear consistent with the car’s low mileage and careful preservation. The overall condition reflects a car that has been maintained to a very high standard and regarded as a standout example within the E36 M3 community.

History
Originally commissioned as a BMW Individual build, this M3’s journey included European delivery and additional outfitting through Alpina, making it one of the more unique E36 M3s produced for the U.S. market. With just 27,000 miles, concours-level presentation, and a rare combination of Individual specification and documented period upgrades, this example stands as one of the most distinctive and collectible E36 M3s available today.
