Building on the success of the E36, the E46 3-Series refined BMW's compact luxury formula. Its design was evolutionary rather than revolutionary, maintaining the brand's signature styling cues. While European buyers had access to a wide range of diesel and petrol engines, U.S. models were primarily offered with inline-six powerplants. The performance gap between European and U.S. models narrowed significantly with this generation, particularly with the M3. Both markets received the same high-revving 3.2L S54 engine, though European models still enjoyed a slight power advantage due to less restrictive emissions equipment.

The E46 platform is for many enthusiasts the model that harkens back to when the enthusiasm for BMW ///M started to take over. The modern introduction to a high-strung performance that felt as comfortable at the track as it did commuting to work. An engine that begged for revs so its six individual throttle bodies could naturally breath while VANOS controlled both the intake and exhaust cams so the trip from idle to 8,000 RPMs was smooth and consistent every time. A factory installed limited-slip differential allowing neutral and progressive oversteer situations. Suspension was bespoke for the ///M3 and engineered through the mechanical processes as opposed to giving that task to computers. When you think of the analog driving experience these are the just some of the ingredients used to create the perfect dish.
The design of the M3 allowed it to elegantly stand out against other models and has certainly stood the test of time. Between the extended arches, side gills, front and rear bumpers, and iconic quad exhaust tips you knew you were near something special. Everything came together in a timeless package that continues to be appreciated twenty years after its inception.
This example encapsulates all of those things and will allow its new owner indulge unhindered by time. The factory smell is a time machine back to the dealership. The matte finish of the leather components are still present and supple as if it was built yesterday. The soft touch trim is removed from any flaking or deterioration of any kind. It is truly an example that provides an experience as BMW intended back in 2006.
History
