EAG Impressions

In the 2000s, one of the best things a manufacturer could do for their sales was to build a car that performed well in enthusiast magazine group tests. Although advertising was important, having automotive journalists vouch for your product was worth far more to buyers who loved driving. In the late 1990s and early 2000s, the BMW Z3 M Roadster did remarkably well in group tests, pitted against cars like the Porsche Boxster, Chevrolet Corvette, and Mercedes Benz SLK-32 AMG, and when BMW debuted its Z3 replacement, the Z4 in 2002, there was bound to be an M version in its future. BMW first showed the Z4 M Coupe to the public at the 2005 Frankfurt Motorshow before starting production in the Spring of 2006, while the M Roadster debuted later in the year. Although the new car was devoid of the exaggerated fender flares of the Z3 M, the Z4 M coupe and roadster were much better-engineered cars and were ready to take on whatever competition would be thrown their way.

Overview

After gaining significant enthusiast-cred with the skunkworks developed Z3 Coupe, when BMW unveiled the Z3 replacement, the Z4, it came as little surprise that a coupe was just around the corner. The fixed roof car provided exceptional levels of torsional rigidity and offered a larger cargo area for improved practicality. Of course, with that extra stiff chassis, BMW’s Motorsport department was excited to get their hands on a Z4 Coupe, and at the 2006 Geneva Motor Show, they presented the production ready version. Weighing less than 40 lbs more than the Z4 M Roadster, the coupe was built for driving enthusiasts and has become quite sought-after in recent years.

This 2007 BMW Z4 M Coupe is an exceptional example that has been under the care of just one owner. Delivered new to Basney Imports of South Bend, Indiana, this car shows a mere 9,932 miles and has been kept in remarkable condition throughout. Finished in Titanium Silver Metallic, the car has been serviced by the dealer from new, and received a rejuvenation by Enthusiast Auto Group in 2016. The Z4 M Coupe is differentiated from its non-M siblings by a set of quad exhaust at the rear, beautiful 18” split 5-spoke wheels, and M badging on the front fenders and rear fascia.

On the inside, the seats and door cards are wrapped in black Nappa leather, and the trim strip on the dashboard is BMW’s signature Carbon Leather which became more common with the later E9X M3. From the factory, the car was optioned with the Premium Package, which includes auto dimming mirrors, power front seats, cruise control and a premium hi-fi system. Additionally, heated front seats were ordered which is a nice thing to have for early morning drives to cars and coffee. As you would expect, the interior is nearly immaculate and shows negligible signs of wear given the ultra-low mileage on the vehicle.

Under the hood sits one of BMW’s most legendary engines - the S54 inline-6. Most commonly found in the E46 M3, this engine is even more exciting in the Z4 M, as weight is down more than 200 lbs when compared to the M3. Although power is down by 3 hp compared to the E46, the 330 horsepower in the Z4 is plenty to give the car 0-60 mph acceleration in just 5 seconds and a top speed electronically limited to 155 mph. The only gearbox available for this car was a 6-speed Getrag manual, which sends power to the rear wheels via a limited-slip differential with Variable M Differential Lock.

History

Although this is the first time EAG has offered this stunning Z4 M Coupe for sale, it isn’t the first time we have had it in our shop. Just over 500 miles ago, in October 2016, the car came to us for a comprehensive rejuvenation. During this service, most things were in excellent condition, but we did find a few significant Z4M specific items requiring service. The VANOS system did not pass all of our tests, so we rebuilt it using a Beisans kit, and the DSC hydro unit had faults stored requiring replacement to ensure the system worked properly. This big items are common in hyper low mileage M Coupes and have now been remedied the right way. While under our care, the car received a coolant and brake fluid flush, as well as our standard S54 service.
