EAG Impressions

BMW production records confirm this M3 was produced on June 26, 1987 at BMW's Munich facility and delivered for the U.S. market on July 1, 1987. Finished from the factory in Diamond Black Metallic (181), it was equipped with the S14 four-cylinder engine and manual transmission. Factory options included air conditioning, electric sunroof, power windows, cruise control, On-Board Computer II, and the optional Sound System. The CARFAX provides unusually early documentation for a car of this age, beginning with its first Indiana title in September 1987. Records indicate the M3 remained in Indiana through 2015 before moving to Kentucky, where it was retained through early 2022. It subsequently made its way to California, where it continued to see very limited mileage and passed its most recent emissions inspection in July 2026. This marks the first time Enthusiast Auto Group has offered this particular E30 M3. With approximately 163,000 miles, a striking Diamond Black over Cardinal Red specification, a CARFAX free from reported accidents or damage, and meaningful recent mechanical servicing, it represents the increasingly difficult-to-find opportunity to own an E30 M3 that can continue to be driven and enjoyed as intended.

Overview

Few cars are as closely connected to BMW Motorsport history as the original E30 M3. Developed as a homologation model for touring-car competition, the E30 M3 combined its high-revving S14 four-cylinder engine with a close-ratio 5-speed manual gearbox, aggressively flared bodywork, and a chassis engineered with competition firmly in mind. Its extraordinary success in motorsport established the M3 nameplate and created a formula BMW M continues to build upon nearly four decades later.

Finished in Diamond Black Metallic over Cardinal Red, this 1988 BMW M3 has traveled approximately 163,000 miles and presents a classic, period-correct color combination. BMW production records confirm chassis 2195939 was produced in Munich on June 26, 1987, equipped with the S14 engine, manual transmission, and rear-wheel drive before being delivered for the U.S. market on July 1, 1987.

Factory equipment includes an electric sunroof, power windows, air conditioning, cruise control, On-Board Computer II, and BMW's optional Sound System. BMW's AIR records also show no factory-recorded retrofits.

Its history is particularly interesting. The accompanying CARFAX traces the M3 back to its first owner in Indiana on September 30, 1987, where the car remained registered for decades. In November 2015, at 162,170 miles, ownership transitioned to Kentucky, where the M3 would remain for approximately the next eight years. Despite the mileage accumulated earlier in its life, the car has traveled remarkably little in recent years.

Recent documentation also reflects meaningful mechanical attention. At 162,872 miles in 2021, the S14 received a compression check, valve adjustment, spark plugs, fuel filter and oil service, while the steering system was inspected and the rack-and-pinion assembly replaced. Subsequent work in 2022 included a coolant temperature sensor, instrument cluster repair, distributor rotor, spark plug wires, and power-steering hoses and lines.

The M3 later relocated to California, where it successfully passed emissions testing in both 2024 and July 2026. Importantly, the CARFAX reports no accidents or damage, no structural damage, no indication of an odometer rollback, and no branded title history. The most recent CARFAX mileage entry is 163,193 miles in July 2026.

Now with Enthusiast Auto Group, this E30 M3 will undergo our comprehensive inspection and preservation process, with any identified mechanical, cosmetic, or maintenance needs addressed as appropriate. Rather than a low-mileage museum piece, this is an opportunity to own an E30 M3 that has been driven and enjoyed throughout its life while retaining a compelling factory specification and documented history.
