The E39 5-Series is often regarded as one of BMW's finest hours, striking a near-perfect balance between comfort, performance, and technology. While European markets enjoyed a wide range of engines, including efficient diesels and potent V8s, U.S. buyers had a more limited selection. The crown jewel of the lineup, the E39 M5, arrived in North America for the 2000 model year. Unlike previous generations, this M5 featured a V8 engine, bringing it closer in specification to its European counterpart. However, subtle differences remained, such as European models receiving a more advanced dynamic stability control system.

This 2003 BMW M5 is on its third trip through the shop at EAG and is finished in one of the E39 M5’s signature colors- Carbon Black Metallic. Showing a remarkable 27,625 miles, the car is in absolutely outstanding condition both inside and out. Carbon Black Metallic is a great color on these cars, looking like a normal black in the dark or when it’s overcast, but when the sun comes out, it shows a remarkable blue hue that you would have never known was there otherwise. This is well matched to the Shadow Chrome finish on the wheels - this multi-stage process consists of multiple paint and clearcoat colors, resulting in a unique smoked look that is notoriously difficult to replicate. The interior of this M5 was ordered with a Sport interior, which fits the car with black “Ostrich” leather centers and aluminum trim throughout the cabin. Over time, the leather in an E39 can dry out and become cracked and creased - this car makes the effort in preservation clear when you open the door. The seats look essentially perfect and the steering wheel shows essentially zero signs of wear. On the entire car, the only upgrade is the addition of a short shift kit and a later ZHP weighted shift knob. Powering this M5 is the aforementioned S62 V8- a true masterpiece of engineering. The 4.9-liter engine produces 394 horsepower and 369 lb-ft of torque thanks to 8 individual throttle bodies and double VANOS variable valve timing. As the first V8 BMW M car, the E39 offered seamless performance anywhere in the powerband. Whereas some of BMW’s previous M cars required the driver to wring them out to extract real-world performance, the E39 M5 offers effortless speed in any gear, at any revs. The only available gearbox for this M5 was a 6-speed Getrag manual, which sent power to the rear wheels through a limited-slip differential. The E39 M5 chassis is turning 25 years old this year, and even today, it remains the sports sedan that every modern sedan is measured against. That is just one of the many reasons that we at EAG are fans of this chassis; we always try to find great examples like this one.
